PUNE: In an attempt to torch his estranged wife’s two-wheeler following a tiff, a fabricator (31) set ablaze eight vehicles on Monday in a society in Kondhwa.
The accused burned three motorcycles, two cars and two autorickshaws. Three vehicles were completely gutted while five others were partially burned. He was arrested by the crime branch later in the evening.
“Around 2 am the man went to his wife’s maternal home and picked up a quarrel. He left and returned at 5am. He removed petrol from a bike and poured it on his wife’s scooter, setting it ablaze and then fled,” senior crime branch (unit II) inspector Krantisinh Patil said. A case under Section 435 of the IPC was registered.
Around 7.30pm on Monday, crime branch constable Pushpendra Chavan, spotted the accused at Lullanagar and took him into custody. Inspector (crime) Sanjay Mogle from Kondhwa police said, “There is no CCTV in the society.”
The complainant told TOI that her husband bolted the door of her house from outside when she did not respond to his knocks. “I saw him from the terrace while he was setting ablaze my and my sister’s vehicles,” the complainant said.
Saddam Sayyed, resident of the society and an autorickshaw driver, said, “My father and I had taken two autorickshaws on rent. As both were gutted in the fire, the owner has now asked us to bear the loss. We cannot afford to pay. The man responsible for the incident should compensate us for the loss.”
Shaibash Shaikh, whose car was partially gutted, said, “The police have prepared a panchnama of the vehicles gutted in fire and have asked me and others to claim compensation from insurance companies.”
