AGRA: A 20-year-old Agniveer aspirant from Madhya Pradesh who was allegedly shot by a UP police team in a “fake encounter”, had “bled to death” even as worried cops arranged for blood, a doctor who had attended to him told TOI on Saturday. Victim Akash Gurjar‘s mother Mamta Devi said that before dying, her son told her that cops in plain clothes had abducted him and “he didn’t know why or what was happening”.

The six-month-old case has come back to life after the court of chief judicial magistrate in Agra earlier in the week ordered the police to register an FIR in the crime. The court also directed the commissioner of Agra police, Preetinder Singh, to get the case investigated by an “independent agency”. Struck with three bullets fired by a UP police team from “close range”, Akash Gurjar, who was on his way to his cousin’s place in Agra, was rushed to SN Medical College in an ambulance.
During initial treatment at the emergency ward, doctors had asked policemen to arrange for blood required to be immediately administered to the patient who was in critical condition. Six cops had then donated blood. Sharing the details, the doctor said, “The patient had suffered bullet injuries in both thighs and left side of the abdomen. The bullets were fired from close range. The patient suffered excessive blood loss. No one from the family of the patient was available. Senior cops who had visited the hospital were asked to arrange for ‘A’ positive blood. Seven units of the blood were donated by policemen and administered to the patient who was later referred to a higher medical facility.” Akash later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Lucknow.
A resident of Gadhora village in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh, Akash was the eldest among three brothers. His parents work as small-time farmers in the Chambal ravines. His mother, Mamta Devi, alleged that police in Agra did not allow them to speak with their injured son while he was undergoing treatment. She added: “Before dying at the Lucknow hospital, he had told me that cops in plain clothes had abducted him when he got down from a bus. He was taken to an unknown location and shot at by the cops.
He had no idea what was happening or why.” On the evening of September 26, 2022, the Agniveer aspirant had left home to live with his cousin Vishnu, in Agra, and prepare for the Army recruitment. The following day, his parents found out that he did not reach his brother’s house and had been critically injured in an “encounter”. Police at the time had claimed that Akash was “involved in illegal sand mining”. After the reported encounter, two FIRs were registered against Akash at Iradat Nagar police station. His parents have rubbished the contention. Meanwhile, the police are yet to register an FIR over allegations of fake encounter following the court order. SHO Rajesh Kumar said, “We are taking legal advice in the matter.”
