AGRA: A UP Roadways bus, travelling at a speed of about 90 km per hour, rammed into a bike parked near a hotel on the GT Road and dragged it for over 12 km in Etah district, killing the 32-year-old biker, Vikas Varshney. Following the impact, Varshney fell a few metres away on the road and the bus went on to drag his bike till it reached a police barricade.
Local residents pointed out that the incident could have resulted in multiple deaths as the bus with its left side of the widescreen completely damaged was travelling on a busy road at high speed with passengers in it. The driver didn’t stop despite being chased by commuters, the locals added. The incident happened on the intervening night of May 19 and 20.
A 40-second video of the incident also went viral on social media.
‘Drunk bus driver arrested’
It purportedly shows the bike struck on the front side of the speeding bus, being dragged away, with a man being hit and thereafter lying on the road. On the basis of the complaint by Varshney’s father, an FIR was registered against the 48-year-old driver of the bus ‘UP 77-AN-1489’ under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304-A (death caused by negligence).
The bus driver, Ajay Kumar, was arrested on Sunday, police said. As per the FIR, Varshney, a local resident, along with two friends had gone out for dinner at a hotel on the GT Road. He was standing near his bike parked on the roadside when the speeding bus struck from behind. Critically injured, Vikas was rushed by his friends to the district hospital where the doctors declared him “brought dead”. SHO of Kotwali Nagar, Sudhir Kumar Singh, said, “The bus driver was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident. He has been arrested.”
