BHOPAL: In a major setback to Project Cheetah, two more cubs born to a cheetah brought from Namibia last September died at MP’s Kuno National Park Thursday. One of the four cubs born to the cheetah, Jwala, had died two days ago. Shaken by the deaths, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has called a meeting of forest officials on Friday.
The cubs, born barely two months ago, took to six the fatalities among cheetahs translocated from African countries to Kuno in the past two months. Preliminary investigations suggest the cause of death as malnutrition. The last remaining cub has been shifted to hospital.
Wildlife activist Ajay Dubey has demanded urgent removal of state’s chief wildlife warden JS Chouhan. National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) on Thursday constituted a “Cheetah Project Steering Committee” to review the progress of the drive. After the death of three adults and three cubs, Kuno is now home to 18 cheetahs.
Following the death of the first cub on Tuesday, a team of wildlife doctors and personnel monitored the remaining cubs and their mother, Jwala. Throughout the day, Jwala was provided with supplementary feed to ensure its well-being. Veterinarians treated the ailing cubs but could not save it.
Officials said May 23 witnessed scorching temperatures, reaching a maximum of 46-47 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest day of the summer season so far. “The intense heat wave led the management and doctors to swiftly provide the cubs treatment,” said an official release.
The dead cubs were found to be weak, underweight and severely dehydrated. Jwala, who was raised by experts, became a mother for the first time. The cubs had only started accompanying Jwala around 8-10 days ago. Cheetah experts note that the survival rate of cheetah cubs in Africa is generally low.
Forest officials said the cubs had signs of weakness since their birth in late March this year to Jwala, earlier known as Siyaya. The births then had brought hope and cheer to those engaged in the cheetah conservation efforts at the park in Sheopur district.
